Saint’s Biography
Saint Julian Sabas the Elder was born around 300 in Heliopolis, Lebanon. He became a hermit in Mesopotamia and gained the reputation of extreme asceticism. He was nicknamed “Sabas” because of his wisdom, which in Syriac means “the old man”. Julian first lived in a damp hermit cell on the Euphrates River, near Edessa in Turkey. Like most holy hermits in the desert, Julian spent time in penance, prayer, and manual labor. According to Legend, he would eat only once a week. A brief biography of Julian was written by Saint John Chrystostom.
