Blessed Mario Vergara was a priest in the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions. He was born on November 16 1910 in Frattamaggiore, Naples, Italy and died as a martyr on May 24 1950 in Shadaw, Kayah, Myanmar together with his catechist Blessed Isidore Ngei Ko Lat.
He was beatified by Pope Francis on May 24 2014 and the ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato at the Cathedral of San Paolo, Aversa, Caserta, Italy.
We celebrate his feast day on May 24 every year in the Catholic Church.
