Saint’s Biography
Saint Blaithmaic of Iona was born in 750 in Ireland. Blaithmaic was from a noble family (Prince) the son of an Irish king. He chose a religious life and lived as a monk. As a monk, Blaithmaic was exemplary and eventually became the abbot of the monastery.
In 823 as he celebrated mass, the entire congregation was slaughtered until only Blaithmaic was left. Blaithmaic was promised that his life would be saved if he gave them the relics. He refused and was therefore cut to pieces by the Danes on the altar steps of the monastery church. He was buried where he had fallen. Many miracles happened in his intercession. His biography was written by his contemporaries, the German Benedictine and Abbot Walafrid Strabo von Reichenau.
